SPLIT LEVEL
Anglesea, Victoria
Located adjacent to Anglesea’s renowned golf course, this alterations + additions project grafts a contemporary addition to an existing, split level, brick holiday home.
The existing rear portion of the dwelling is replaced with a user friendly, aesthetically pleasing, practical & efficient addition to house & entertain the extended family for those precious holiday times.
An operable pavilion on the lower floor with the ability to open from two of four sides enables the space to transform and toggle between open / closed, inside / outside, protected / exposed. Combined with a terrace, this space will see the family on a summers day entertaining, enjoying BBQ’s, laying in the sun and enjoying a family holiday home for what it should be; a place to gather.
To retreat from the gathering, upstairs offers a bedroom wing where privacy & peace can be found. Large north facing windows with calculated eaves welcomes winter solar gain & protects from summer heat, whilst full height louvered windows from the south help promote cross ventilation.
The remaining portion of the existing dwelling is modified with a floating skillion roof accompanied by operable highlight windows, which welcome natural light and promote ventilation.
All the different zones/wings sprout from a central atrium & staircase. The atrium promotes stack ventilation with an operable glazed roof which acts like a chimney to expel the stale air. When combined with the other operable elements within the building, the internal temperature is able to be adjusted as necessary without the common use of active conditioning.
Constructed from low maintenance materials, the concept was borne through a rhythmic structure to help respect the budget and maintain simplicity.
